Irish Prime Minister Ahern to step down in May

Alert Email Print By William L. Watts

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Long-serving Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern announced Wednesday he will resign in May after nearly 11 years in the post. Ahern told a Dublin news conference that he would tender his resignation as both prime minister and leader of the Fianna Fail party on May 6, the BBC reported. The announcement comes a day after Ahern initiated a legal challenge aimed at limiting the work of a tribunal probing planning corruption in the 1990s, the report said. "I will not allow issues related to my own person to dominate the people and the body politic," said Ahern, who has denied any wrongdoing.
